I know this is a special book but I don't like itOnly Nothomb's sense of humor and satire was unmistakable. To compare to her other works, especially "Fear and Trembling", "Loving Sabotage" has been less interesting.
Another of her autobiographical works. This one talks about her time spent in China.Having little interaction with the chinese population and spending her time in the place destined for foreign diplomats she's soon convinced to join a most unusual war between the local kids. They play war against the germans children and I must say, kids can be the cruelest of persons. Some of the descriptions about the mixture of vomit and urine was really disgusting, but also the way they used it. I can't
I think Nothomb's writing is witty and hilarious, but I really don't care about those children and their war game in China in the 70s.
LOVED this perspective on childhood by a VERY worldly, mature and self aware child with an amazing memory, a strong metaphysical understanding and a fantastic sense of humor. NOT THIS COVER though. It is published in many languages and with MANY covers. This is the worst of them all.

weird and kind of fake-deep novella that could have flourished had nothomb not constantly returned to the bizarre and ostensibly unembellished memory of her childhood wherein children torture each other w their own piss and vomit (?????) in a months-long imaginary war to which their parents are obliviousfelt like watching a rabelaisian fairly oddparents lolwhich is entertaining don't get me wrong but in a b movie kind of way
