In many ways, I see Etienne de La Boetie's monograph a precursor to the civic code of resistance to tyranny made famous by Paine and Thoreau, by Sartre and Frankl. This is a remarkable essay because he uses his strong grasp of classic histories and some current (1560?) references to supply an antidote to tyranny.
