Narration Supposing Books The Sound of Drums / Last of the Time Lords (The Black Archive #38)

This is another interesting - if slim - book from the Black Archive.

These books always give you something to think about, even in a story you're incredibly familiar with. As it goes The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords is not one of those Doctor Who stories I have watched many times. So, this was even more refreshing.

Firstly - and perhaps indirectly - it reminds you about how much of a dick the Tenth Doctor was to Martha.

Secondly, it reminds you that the line between the Master and the Doctor is not as thick as you think it might be.

Thir...I don't know why I'm writing this review like this. Anyway, there are some interesting points made about how Martha and her family and Lucy Saxon are used and whether they were ill-used. There's certainly a good argument to be put here that Lucy Saxon is very poorly treated by the Doctor who doesn't seem to care about her at all. There's an element of politics here, but that's what this story is about. Indeed, as Mortimer points out Harold Saxon is a politician who would fit in nicely with the modern political scene.

Mortimer also makes interesting points about class, although I never really thought of the Doctor as a 'Lord' in the upper-class sense. Like I never thought of him as an officer. But then I never really thought of him as a great white savior either. Which he often is. And that brings me to another point discussed here, the 'messianic' nature of the Doctor. Or his mythical nature. Mortimer makes good points here to.

So again another Black Archive does a fine job of making me think about what I've watched probably more deeply than I did at the time.
