I did really like this book! I really enjoyed reading about the adventures of Leithan, the main character, in northern Canada. Leithan is told he has a year or less to live, and so he sets out on a crazy search for a man he knows only from his friends' descriptions, and a search for himself as well. The book is very interesting for those who enjoy details, and has some interesting themes that are good for discussing. The whole idea of the Sick Heart River itself is not what I expected beforeEven though the central premise is bleak - the dying Leithen going on last adventure - this is an excellent read. His emotional journey is described with great skill, as is the true wilderness of Canada's northern interior. You probably have to be in the right mood to enjoy this book ... but I was.PS. And I bought it from Barter Books in Alnwick, a true indy bookshop. Much better than Amazon!!!
As of the time Im writing this, I have not read any of the four preceding books in the Edward Leithen series; this in no way hindered my ability to follow the plot or to identify with Leithen (or with any of the other characters, for that matter).Our story opens during the months leading up to World War IIs eruption in Europe. This book is very self-reflective, and has no connection to the previous books with regard to genre (the whole series is very irregular). For all that it is quite good dont listen to the nay-sayers, this book does have a Buchan style plot and its not just one man going into the wilderness (although come to think of it, that IS the plot of a lot of Buchans books). A book that I read many years ago, and enjoyed very much.Said to be Buchan's best, and I think this would have to be correct.The book's ending has stayed in my memory all this time, a lovely book.
