When I sat down to write this review, I initially wanted to give the book four stars, but ended up settling on three instead. I stand by that rating, but be aware going into this that I was leaning really, really close to four stars. This is, overall, a perfectly serviceable and satisfying conclusion to the Lockwood & Co series - plot lines are resolved, questions are answered, characters are given suitable endings, and everything is wrapped up in a nice little bow. Finishing a series that you love is like saying goodbye to a great friend who move abroad. Yes, you can see them again, but it won't be the same since there is a sense of finiteness to it. Overall, Lockwood and Co is another amazing fantasy entry by Jonathan Stroud, who I think is very underrated compared to authors like Rick Riordan with his mediocre, corny, yet popular series. The Empty Grave is flat - unsurprising - uninspiring. This doesn't do anything to match the exciting worldbuilding, sense of possibility, and lurking unknown horrors that the previous books have. Instead, it puts all the existing pieces together. Neatly. It wraps up all loose ends. Predictably. The threats are insufficiently threatening and the danger insufficiently dangerous. Even the latent government commentary is replaced with an overt power-mad conspirator acting in a way we've seen before.
