Storytelling is for fun. That's not what they tell you in English Lit 301. There you endure blither about 'mirroring the human condition', or capturing real life in beige dialogue on dull days, else grandiose calls to craft words into entire worlds. All very nice, if that's what you like. And yet the stone truth remains, unmoved: storytelling is for fun."Piratica" is told for fun; to make the reader giggle, make the teller laugh. I had a hard time with this one. For starters, the style was so bizarre, I found it very hard to get into. At times, there were so many commas inexplicably in a sentence, it was very difficult to understand. I wanted to like this - young girl takes over a troupe of actors and becomes a fearsome pirate? Battles another lady pirate? Takes after her awesome mom lady pirate? Yes!!! - but it was so strangely written to me, I struggled reading it, and ended up skimming large chunks (which I rarely do
A philosophical and spiritual enlightenment, a joy to read simple but deep meaning poetry.Beautiful illustrations that draw you in at another level.
Bloody Jack meets Pirates of the Caribbean! This was not my favorite pirate story though it was entertaining and enjoyable. I doubt I'll continue the series as I much preferred Bloody Jack. Well written and with likeable characters, I recommend this for all pirate fans.
After hitting her head and regaining lost memories while attending an academy for young ladies, Artemesia sets out to find the old crew of her pirate mother and sail for treasures untold - once she figures out how to turn a group of actors into legitimate bandits of the seas! Lee delivers a humorous and enjoyable adventure with a tinge of mystery and action that will have fans of the high seas chuckling for sure. Artemesia is the daughter of a pirate queen, and she's sick of practicing deportment at the Angels Academy for Young Maidens. Escaping from the school, she hunts up her mother's crew and breezily commands them out to sea in a leaky boat. Unfortunately, Art's memories of her early life may not be accurate-her seasick crew are actors, and Art's infamous mother was the darling of the stage in a pirate drama. But fiery, pistol-proof Art soon shapes her men into the cleverest pirate crew afloat. And when they meet the dread ship Enemy and her beautiful, treacherous captain, Goldie Girl, Art is certain that her memories are real. The Seven Seas aren't large enough for two pirate queens: Art will have the battle of her life to win her mother's title--and the race for the most fabulous treasure in pirate lore. This gaudy, outrageous tale sparkles with swordplay, skullduggery, and salty language--not to mention over-the-top comedy!Itemize Books As Piratica: Being a Daring Tale of a Singular Girl's Adventure Upon the High Seas (Piratica #1)

I bought this book to put into my Little Free Library, but wondered where it might fit on the range of age-appropriatenessespecially because I intended to loan it first to a neighbor teen. The best way to determine this, of course, was to read it myself. Surprise! It's a great book, and despite the story line, has little gore, with zero vulgarity and profanity. (Unless you're worried about exclamations like "Great shells!" or "Upon my father's coat!")
